YES For Salem!

For our students. For our future. For our city!

Yes For Salem

On May 5, 2026, Salem voters will be asked to approve a proposal to build a new Salem High School. The new, state-of-the-art high school would replace the outdated 50-year-old building through a cost-effective state-city partnership that minimizes impacts on Salem taxpayers and maximizes state funding. The proposal has been approved by every member of the School Committee, every City Councillor, and the Mayor.

VOTE YES ON TUESDAY, MAY 5, 2026

Why Yes?

    • Vote yes for a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a new, state-of-the-art high school which better positions Salem to provide all students a future-focused learning environment with vital new spaces for athletics, arts and extra curricular facilities to support advancement at every level.

      • Salem has always prided itself on public schools that support diverse learners and educators. Our community deserves a high school that matches our bold goals for a brighter future.

      • A new high school will have modern, flexible academic spaces and multi-purpose classroom and non-academic spaces to accommodate the needs of all learners as well as the community.

      • The school will have state-of-the-art spaces to accommodate the district’s growing career and technical education programs and ensure all students are prepared for the careers of today and tomorrow.

      • The new facilities will also offer updated and expanded space for athletics, arts and the full range of extra curricular activities,

    • The new facilities will offer updated and expanded space for athletics, including MIAA regulation baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse fields, which do not exist at the current campus.

    • The new high school will also upgrade our theater and music spaces for Salem High School’s award-winning arts programs, creating a welcoming space for the community to enjoy performances.

    • Vote yes for the most cost-effective solution which leverages hundreds of millions of dollars in state funding, minimizes student impact and addresses longstanding Willson Street/Highland Avenue congestion at a lower cost to local taxpayers than the mandatory code, safety and access upgrades.

      • This is the best option for our community and cost-conscious taxpayers.

      • Fixes to bring the school up to code won’t address many of the underlying structural, code and safety issues AND they will be more expensive for taxpayers.

      • Building a new high school now in partnership with the Massachusetts School Building Administration will mean the state covers nearly half the cost. Bottom line: A Yes vote will save taxpayers money. A Yes vote builds a new school at a cost to Salem taxpayers of about $250 million. A Note vote means a renovation project costing Salem taxpayers $354 million.

      • This new school will save taxpayers significantly on energy costs. The current building is almost 25 percent of the city’s entire electric bill, $1 million per year. The new school will be close to net zero and less costly to run.

      • Building a new facility will ensure the least disruption to students (no trailers or temporary structures will be required during construction as the current building will remain in use throughout)

      • The new high school design will allow for better traffic flows off Highland Avenue and Willson Street to address long-standing backups onto the main thoroughfares in the mornings and afternoons.

  • Vote yes for a gathering place that fosters community and continues to make Salem a city where people want to live, stay, learn, build careers and raise families.

    • A new high school will keep more students in Salem and will help retain our existing educators and attract new ones

    • A new high school will attract and keep more young families in Salem

    • A community’s high school is its flagship building. Salem High School can be a jewel for our city, and serve as a better site for community gatherings and large-scale events.
